Named – Yona Wrap Coat

I made my first suit when I was 17 years old for a friend, a fellow theater nerd, who everyone knew would end up on Prom Court as the Prince of Style. It was super casual, made in denim and inspired by that denim dress worn by Britney Spears in 2001 (and, only by extension, […]

  • Do you ever realize in the middle of sewing a garment that that garment just ISN’T going to work for you? I had that realization halfway through making this @burda_style sweater... the fabric was too drapey for the style and size, I should have graded the pattern down a size or two, and shortened it by a couple inches. Usually—in the past anyway—I would put these unfinished projects in an old shopping bag to hide in the corner of my closet until I felt like finishing a project I had no use for— in other words, never.
But this time, I decided there was value in finishing it, even if I was never going to wear it. What’s the value? Strengthening the habit of finishing what I start, building my muscle memory for garment construction and thus making future projects easier on myself, fully learning what mistakes I made and how I can avoid them in the future, and the biggest bonus: now I have a finished sweatshirt to gift to whichever of my friends or family comes to visit me in Germany first this year.
I’m tempted to call this a #sewingfail, but I won’t, mostly because the sewing itself went just fine. This is just accidental #unselfishsewing at its finest.
PS I made this baby reversible!

  • I tallied all 140+ votes, and...🥁🥁🥁... the black and copper buttons won with 66! The plain brass came in a close second with 50, the minty mints came in at 24, and, sadly, the wild card trailed in last with 4 votes. For the record, if someone voted for two, I counted both. Thanks to everyone who contributed their thoughts!

  • ❄️ What are your favorite winter patterns? ❄️
I spent the afternoon #konmarifolding my handmade summer clothes in winter storage. I know it might sound a little loopy, but I’m really missing them right now. I’ve never lived anywhere as cold as it is here, and my wardrobe was not prepared for endless weeks of freezing and below. I feel like I’ve been rotating the same 4 drab-colored, store-bought wool sweaters over the same 4 wool turtlenecks for the past three months. It makes me feel sad, but I run cold and I commute by train, so roughing it out with plain cotton isn’t an option. I know my handmade winter wardrobe is seriously lacking, but I haven’t found any winter patterns that excite me, other than jackets, which I feel I can only make so many of. What do y’all do in the winter to get by? What kind of clothes do you make? Where do you source your winter fabrics? And what are your favorite winter fabrics?
  • I got my buttons in the mail! What do you think? Swipe for options 👉🏼
1️⃣ 2cm vintage mint enamel buttons
2️⃣ 1,7cm black and copper buttons with a flower/star motif (detail shot at end)
3️⃣ 1,7cm plain brass buttons
4️⃣ -wild card- 2cm multi-colored enamel buttons. 🌸 I’m leaning towards 2️⃣, because the copper plays nicely with the green and the 2cm buttons feel too large.

  • I’m soooo close to finishing this green inside-out denim pair of @annaallenclothing #persephonepants! I wasn’t a fan of the hidden button fly on my previous pairs, so I made the fly exposed on this one. Excuse the wonderclips holding my pants together... I just ordered some vintage mint green enamel jeans buttons to top these jeans off, and I can’t wait to see if they’re a match. Swipe to see details 👉🏼
  • I got my custom labels in the mail last week from @dutchlabelshop and was finally able to add it to a garment, my first of 2019! I like to add a little contrasting fabric to the back, almost like a frame, to make each one a little more unique 💗 I mean, can we ever get enough decoration?
Now I’m just trying to decide if I should go back and retroactively add it my older handmades or if I should let this be a marker of time, that all garments with this tag were made in 2019 or beyond! What do you think? 🤔
PS if you’re itching for your own beautiful labels to add your own signature to your handmade clothing, I’ve got a coupon code for you! Use sakijane15 at checkout for 15% off your purchase!
  • Just finished up my first project of the year, a boiled wool wrap jacket for #sewjapaneseinjanuary. I’m not the happiest with it as outerwear, but I know I’ll be wearing this one a ton as a housecoat. Maybe it’ll grow on me?
  • Today I’m working on my #sewjapaneseinjanuary project— a robe-like wrap in this blush boiled wool I bought in Paris two Decembers ago. I’m so thankful for @bloglessanna and @craftyjane_makes for putting on this challenge because it’s really lit a fire under my butt to immediately start on one of the projects from my new Japanese pattern books! Swipe to see the cover, and check my stories for updates throughout the day 💗
  • I’ve been pretty busy the last few days (months? and jetlagged!) and I’m sooooo excited to get back into the sewing room and more engaged with you all! I feel like I’ve been MIA even if I’ve still been posting— I have no idea what kind of sewing challenges are happening right now or what new patterns have come out. So, update me! What are your favorite things that have been happening in the community lately? What’s bringing you joy? What are you excited about?
Also, a closeup shot of my kitty pins (for decoration only, unfortunately) from Misuya Bari in Kyoto. Since each one is handmade, each kitty face is different, and the proprietor insisted I look at each pin with a magnifying glass before choosing which ones to take home. Thanks to @cashmerette and @seamworkmag for the Kyoto fabric shops guide and tipping me off to that magical place!
